Heart Goals - Day 26 #31DaysOfBlogging

We hate to alarm anyone, but….

There are ONLY 5 days left until 2019.

Say what? That’s incredible.

One of the most helpful things we’ve learned about starting a new year is how to set goals and how to get organized. One of our real-life BFF’s and business heroes, Whitney English, has this amazing plan to start you off on the right foot.

Here we are in Napa (Whitney is on the left, our other awesome friend Jess on the right!)

Here we are in Napa (Whitney is on the left, our other awesome friend Jess on the right!)

It’s a workbook called Heart Goals and it’s been such a helpful tool to us…we wanted to share it with you. Go check it out!

We talk to Whitney about the Heart Goals in this episode of Girls Just Pod To Have Fun, as well as lots of other fun things like who we would get celebrity pedicures with, donuts, and other generally fun life topics.

We are so lucky to have such incredible, inspiring friends. We know you will love Whitney and Heart Goals as much as we do!

LAUGH! - Day 18 #31DaysOfBlogging

What’s better than wine, friends, and laughter? It’s like the trifecta of awesome. We got the chance to go to Napa in April with two of our closest friends, Whitney and Jess. We went to dream up some ideas….more on that soon.

(We are working on putting together a retreat for YOU to come to where we dream, laugh, drink wine, and get inspired. Can’t wait to share more of this with you. )

Another thing we got to do while we were in Napa for this trip was to go see our favorite comedian, Kathleen Madigan. We’ve learned that laughter truly CHANGES things. There’s a reason why it is said that it’s the best medicine. We believe it. We take any chance we get to laugh. We were so stoked that Kathleen happened to have a show in Napa while we were there! Her show was amazing, as always, and if you ever get the chance to see her LIVE, go!

Life can get so serious. All of us humans are under a lot of pressure to perform, provide, do, do, do all the time. Sometimes you need to escape the pressure and just laugh. Life is funny, after all. It’s not all serious.

As you head home for the holidays, or to in-laws, or whatever you may be doing, make sure to add laughter to the mix. Play some funny games, drink some wine, and watch these Kathleen Madigan specials on Netflix. The whole fam will love them!

Tomorrow the blog is all about answering your burning questions about if we’ve been dating on the walkabout. Hint hint…we have! And we’ve got stories for you!

Much love,

Behind The Scenes with Podcast Guests - Day 6 #31DaysOfBlogging

When we decided to start our podcast, we made a “dream list” of guests we would love to have on the show to interview. GUYS, almost all of them said YES! We only have a few left on our original list that we still would love to have on the show, but we realized we need to UPDATE THE LIST with some new dream guests!

Honestly though, each and every one of these guests were amazing to have on the show.  One thing we loved is that we did each and every interview IN REAL LIFE. That’s pretty rare for podcasts these days. That was part of the beauty of the ability to travel this year. We joined people in their living rooms, dressing rooms, basements, offices….and sometimes in whatever hotel or Airbnb we were staying in at the time.

We thought it would be fun to give you a little bit more of a behind the scenes peek into some of the interviews we were fortunate to have this season. Here’s a little tidbit we remember that we think you might enjoy.

Ben Higgins

The night before the interview, we went to Ben’s coffee company’s (Generous Coffee) launch party. We had SO MUCH fun at the event and may or may not have celebrated with a few margaritas that may or may not have ended at a karaoke bar singing karaoke with some new friends. This was good times, sunshine. Yet, we did not make it to bed until ummm after 3:00AM, and the margaritas, along with the altitude, along with very little sleep, made it a wee bit of a rough morning for the ‘ole J&K. We held it together and decided that the perfect thing to bring to a morning podcast interview were DONUTS! So, we took an Uber to a donut shop, then to Ben’s house, and he made us some of the best coffee (thank you Generous Coffee) ever. That totally cured us from our somewhat hungover state, and we had some good laughs about it on the episode, which you can hear here. (Also, shout out to Mr. Higgins for being our first ever podcast guest. He set the bar for sure.)

Ally Fallon

Something funny about Ally’s episode is that we were in Nashville at an apartment that we were subletting, and Ally and our other friend Betsy came over — we got talking and catching up so much that we almost missed our window of recording! Ally had SUCH WISDOM about life and comparison — it’s still something we think about frequently. She is just so great, and her new book is a MUST READ. You can hear her episode here.

Whitney English

We always have epic times with Whitney. She’s a friend of ours that adventures with us and we love that about her. She is always down to road trip, meet up at some conference or event, or just hang out wherever and talk about the deep things in life. After this episode, we had some amazing bacon at First Watch that had pepper and maple syrup, and for some reason, that bacon really sticks out when we think about this episode. HA! Whitney is wise, deep, and one of the most genuine people we know. Listen to her episode here.

Charles Esten

This episode was recorded at Chip’s house in his basement. We are such big fans of Chip’s whole family. When we recorded this episode, Chip’s mom was there visiting for his big Opry show that was the next day. We were so grateful he still took the time to chat with us even though he had so much going on. He’s just such a great human, you guys. Before the episode, we chatted in Chip’s kitchen with his wife Patty and his mom, and we talked a lot about the 4 Things Totes that we had with us, discussing how hard it is to choose 4 words to put on those bags! Listen to our episode with Chip here!

Miles Adcox

We headed out to Onsite in somewhat rural Tennessee to meet up with Miles to record this episode. We met him at his office and then drove over to a separate building adjacent to the Onsite property. Well, it’s only about a 2 minute drive, but there was a truck that had caught on fire right by the entrance to the property. It was scary to see! People were there, keeping it under control, but we took a long way around to go record the podcast, and on our way back, we passed the truck again and it was completely burned out. Luckily no one was hurt, but it was quite a sight. Not a great day for that truck driver. Miles shared his wisdom with us and you don’t want to miss this conversation.

Hunter Hayes

We arrived at Hunter’s house in Nashville with a huge greeting from his adorable dogs. Guys, they stole the show. They wanted to hang with us and be right in the mix. At one point, one was right up on the couch with us...we think she wanted to share about what she did when life didn’t go the way she planned! Hunter is one of the most down to earth genuine guys around, and his dogs are pretty darn cute too. Listen to his episode here.

Ginna Claire Mason and Mary Kate Morrissey

This was our first backstage interview of the season, and the ambiance was just so incredible. The girls had their dressing rooms so magically decorated and they were just THE best hosts. They had wine and popcorn for us all (coconut water for them) and we felt right at home. From the minute we walked in the stage door, these girls felt like old long lost friends. MK gave us a little stuffed avocado (yes, it sounds weird but true) that we have brought with us everywhere since. These girls are THE BEST. Listen here.

Jann Arden

Before we recorded with Jann, she asked us to come up and sing Nashville during her show that night. We went and soundchecked and then came back to her dressing room to record the episode. We laughed and laughed because the toilet kept running in the bathroom next door. Jann is just so funny and we were hoping we could keep it together. Her dog Midi joined us for the episode too. Our conversation with Jann was like many conversations we’ve had with her before, but we were lucky enough to record this one so we can have it forever. Love her so much. Listen to Jann’s episode here.

Shots! Shots! Shots! (#31DaysofBlogging)

This blog is a part of a series #31DaysofBlogging … we are going through the year (2015) chronologically.

Making the LULLABIES album was definitely a highlight of 2015. You can read more about how we got the idea to make it here, but now we wanted to tell you two fun side-stories about LULLABIES….

1)

Our friend Jenny (who we made the album for) needed shots once a week for 12 weeks of her pregnancy and she asked us if one of us would learn how to do it so she didn’t have to go to the hospital once a week for an appointment just to get a quick shot. Now, we all know how Jill feels about needles or blood or anything medically related….she is NOT having it.

So, that left me, Kate. Nurse Kate, apparently. I went to the Dr with Jenny and Nurse Donna taught Nurse Kate here how to give a shot {insert all the fear and emotion here.} Not only was I going to have to stick a needle into my freind, I also had the pressure of not paralyzing her in the process. The shots went into her “lower back area--upper gluteous maximus” if you get my gist. The first time I did it, my hands were shaking and I reconfirmed that my calling in life is music, not nursing. OMG, how do you guys do it? Mad respect.

Anyhow...we made it through...the process got easier and let’s just say that only one time did I almost give her a shot with the wrong sized needle. Oopsies. And by almost, I mean I definitely stuck her with the needle, panicked, knew something was wrong, and then stopped. OMG. But, all the other times it was great and there is definitely a new bond that forms with a friend after going through something like that together.

Here’s a picture of our last shot on Tuesday...just 2 days before we surprised her with the album.

So, if any of you ever need a shot--I’m your gal. Well, probably not. I’m kind of glad that I don’t have to do it anymore. But, I didn’t know 2015 was going to be the year that I learned how to give shots. Who knows what next year will hold?? Nurse Kate, signing off

2)

We wanted to tell you a bit about how one of the songs was written. We were at a conference and we heard a friend, Jami Nato, speak. She has an incredible story--she’s writing a book and we cannot wait to read it because it’s going to change people's lives. Follow her here and stay up to date with all of her goings-ons because she’s amazing. That's Jami upfront, next to Jill in the rockin' shades. And our other BFF Whitney in the back with Kate.

Anyway--she spoke at the conference and she said something that really moved us. She is a mom to four littles and she said she doesn’t tell her kids to “be brave” or “be kind.” She tells them to ask God to help them to be brave or be kind. That we can’t do it on our own. That we need God to fill the gap, to change our hearts when we can’t do it on our own. YES. We love this thought and concept. It’s simple, but it’s huge.

There are so many things that we think we can do in our own strength, but we can’t. Not on our own. We need to ask for help. So we wrote, “Love Be Near.” It’s a prayer asking for God to be near us and to help us hour by hour, day by day.

Below are the lyrics. We hope they are a reminder of a small prayer we can all sing in our hearts.

Who can believe tomorrow is the last day of 2015?? Wow.

Much love,

Jill and Kate

LOVE BE NEAR

Help me be brave

Help me be strong

Help me choose right over wrong

Love be near me now

Love be near me now

Help me not fear

Help me to grow

Help me to know I’m never alone

Love be near me now

Love be near me now

Help me be kind

Help me be free

Help me always see what you see

Love be near me now

Love be near me now

Love be near

Love be near

Love be near me now

Love be near me now

Help me to sing

This song in my heart

Be a light in the dark

Love be near me now

Love be near me now

When In Rome With Whitney

This blog is a part of a series #31DaysofBlogging … we are going through the year (2015) chronologically.

In early October, our friend Whitney came to Nashville for a visit and stayed with us for a few days.

Whitney is one of the amazing new friends we met in Canada earlier in the summer. This chick is BADASS. Can we say that? Yes, yes we can. Because she is.

She started this company called Day Designer and maybe you’ve seen them, I don’t know, IN TARGET. (She’s like royalty in design circles, which we’ll get to in a minute.)

She’s also a mom of 3 cuties, married to the best guy ever, and the definition of a solid, quality friend. Plus, she’s wicked smart and has so much business advice for us that we actually RECORD our conversations sometimes, (with her permission of course.) We learn so much from her every time we get together and also we have such a great time. So we were excited that she was coming to Nashville to hang & stay with us.

The three musketeers.

The three musketeers.

We sort of unloaded on Whitney (sorry Whit) about our year and how we felt a little bit overwhelmed with what to do and how to navigate the road we were on. Whitney was headed to speak at a conference in Georgia after she left us in Nashville...and being the spontaneous, helpful person that she is, she said “COME WITH ME.”

We were like, “Whitney...that’s cute and all but, no. We can’t crash your conference.” But sometimes in life you just have to trust the company you keep and TAKE A FREAKIN’ adventure. So we hopped in the car with her and headed to Rome, Georgia.

The gorgeous setting where the Pursuit conference was held. Can you say gorgeous?

The gorgeous setting where the Pursuit conference was held. Can you say gorgeous?

Now, we were not really supposed to be at this conference. But, we were kindly welcomed by everyone we met. We watched Whitney speak and KILL it….and then she asked us to play a few songs after she spoke. It was such an honor to share our music with these new friends.

And friends we did make! Jami, Kelli, Vanessa, Karen…..We were in a rough patch and it was so nice meeting and speaking with other women who were honest, vulnerable and real. Sometimes just being in a space where vulnerability and honesty are the norm is what helps draw it out of you. We are so thankful that Whitney had the crazy idea to take us along on this roadtrip with her. It was just what we needed.

Back to the fact that Whitney is design royalty...everything she does is BEAUTIFUL. It was so fun seeing people get excited to meet her...CELEB STATUS y’all :) Like, seriously go follow her on Instagram right now. And get a Day Designer because she has created something that is not ONLY beautiful, but will help you organize your days and your life with ease.

Thanks Whitney for being someone we can look to for advice AND adventure!  To many more adventures together! xo j&k
