When A Song Spills Out - Day 22 #31DaysOfBlogging

As songwriters, every once in a while, there is this magic thing that happens. The song just spills out. It’s not always the case. Sometimes we labor and labor over lyrics, melody, chord changes…but when the magic happens, and the song pours out, you never forget it. This has happened for us a few times, and the songs that have come out that way are the most honest songs we’ve ever written. My Love was one of those, Same Side was one of those, and this past year, Nashville became another one of those magic moments.

Nashville had been “home” for 10 years, and while there is so much to love about it, we also had had a lot of heartbreak there. There had been personal heartache and professional heartache, and we were feeling completely depleted. We had worked and worked, given and given, tried and tried, and it always felt like we were coming up short. We had friendships that struggled, relationships that failed, career opportunities that stung, and we felt at rock bottom.

The song Nashville spilled out of us one night in April, and we never even made changes to it after that night.

That is so rare for us. Usually we will edit a song, make some lyric changes down the road, but this song came out as it is to this day.

In September, we got to go into the studio and record it with one of our best friends, Luke DeJaynes. It is probably just one of the most important and personal songs we have ever written and recorded.

If you have ever felt like a person or a place has let you down, especially when you have REALLY tried to make it work, if you have ever felt like you are running on empty, if you have ever felt STUCK and like you just needed SOMETHING to change, we hope you can find a bit of reliability in this song. Yes, we wrote it about a town, but it’s honestly a love letter/breakup song about anything in your life that has caused you heartache. You can click the picture below to listen:

It’s been really amazing to see how you guys have connected with this song. That’s why we write. That’s we share the painful stories…because if we can make any of you listening feel less alone and say, “me too,” we know we are on the right track. Songwriting is so special and sacred to us. Thank you for allowing us into your story.

Speaking of songwriting…tomorrow we’re telling you about when we met our all-time favorite songwriter IN AN AIRPORT…

Much love,

You Are Not Alone - Day 1 #31DaysofBlogging

It’s December 1st, which means that it’s time to kick off #31DaysofBlogging :) Woohoo! This is one of our favorite traditions that we’ve started because it causes us to look back at the year behind us and get excited for the new year ahead. We love writing and using this blog to share thoughts, stories, recipes, etc. with you. So, bookmark this page because for the next 30 days, we will be posting a new blog every day and you don’t want to miss any of the fun!

rawpixel-445771-unsplash.jpg

With all of the holiday celebrations already in full swing, we wanted to make sure that you were aware of a couple things:

We want to send you a Christmas card and you have 7 more days to get your address to us.

Just click here, fill out your address, and voila … a Christmas card shall appear in your mailbox. A real, handwritten card from yours truly.  Can I get an AMEN for fun mail and not another bill…AMIRIGHT? AMEN and AMEN. No strings attached. It’s just our way of thanking you for being an amazing community/tribe. So, whatcha waiting for?

The holidays can be hard. We totally get it. Whether you are in the middle of a tense relationship, find yourself experiencing a new loss, or just personal reasons have got you feeling down in the dumps, the holidays can just feel extra hard.

There can also be a lot of expectation that you bring to the table during the holidays — you thought things would look different by now or you were hoping for a different outcome and you find yourself in the same place. Honestly, we have both been there. Part of why we started the walkabout was because we were feeling so stuck that we knew we had to do something drastic to get out of the “stuck-ness.” I remember saying, “I just don’t want to show up for Christmas in the exact same state that I did last year. Something has to change.” So, last year, we sold everything and spent 2018 on a “walkabout.”

We’ll tell you more about that tomorrow, but if you are feeling super alone right now, we invite you to listen to this song - Tired of Being Alone — and know that you are not alone.

Tomorrow we’ll tell you more about our journey of getting unstuck. Until then, know you’re loved and not alone. Leave a comment if you need an extra boost this holiday season.

Much love,

J&K

We've Been There Too

Hello friends.

So, there is this show that’s out right now and some of you have watched it and some of you probably haven’t...it covers some serious topics including rape and suicide. We watched it and all I can say is that since we have finished it we have both been consumed with sadness. The show is graphic and hard to watch...and while I don’t think I would recommend you watching it, it did awaken something inside each of us that made us want to share this blog and some thoughts with you.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of people hurting, feeling sad, feeling alone, and hiding how they are really doing on the inside. The outside might seem shiny and put together, but on the inside things are falling apart. Friends, readers of this blog...we need to acknowledge this. Depression is normal. Sadness is normal. Hurt is normal. But, while thinking that you are alone in the world is normal, it is NOT TRUE.

If you were to ask us why we write songs, we would tell you we do it for 3 reasons:

  1. It is therapeutic for us.
  2. God made us to do this.
  3. We want to fight loneliness.

That last one. That is the big one. We write songs and share our experiences because we want you to hear a song that we wrote and realize that you aren’t alone. That we’ve felt it too. We always say that loneliness is the worst disease and if someone can hear a song or meet another person at a show and share an experience or a feeling...that’s what it’s all about for us. That’s why we do fan meet-ups, J&K 5K weekends, meet & greets, etc. We want you to feel seen, connected to others and maybe, just maybe, less lonely. And we want to feel less lonely too.

We decided to make a bullet point list that is hopefully helpful to you. It’s a list to show you that what you are feeling...we have felt it too. And we've written songs about it. We are all in this together.

If you're feeling lonely: we've been there too: TIRED OF BEING ALONE

If you're feeling too worried: we've been there too: QUIT WORRYING

If you think you'll never get over the person that just broke your heart and is ignoring your texts/calls: we've been there too. NEVER OVER YOU

If you wish you could bring someone who has died back to life: we've been there too: BRING YOU BACK TO LIFE

If you're feeling hopeless: we've been there too: MY LOVE

If you've just been through a breakup & nothing makes sense: we’ve been there too: NOTHING MAKES SENSE

If your friends change and are maybe going through an addiction: we've been there too: ONE DAY

If you're feeling happy (and a little sassy): we've been there too: POP SONG

If you're devastated after a breakup and never want to open your heart again: we've been there too: IN LOVE AGAIN

If you feel betrayed & need a clean start: we've been there too: BURN IT DOWN

If you’re feeling discouraged about the state of the world: we've been there too: SAME SIDE

If you have a crush and everything reminds you of them: we've been there too: TOGETHER BABY

If you are feeling jaded: we've been there too: HEART OF STONE

If you feel like you're getting in your own way: we've been there too: CHASING STORMS

If you’re wondering if love will ever happen: we've been there too: YOU MIGHT BREAK MY HEART

If the pain is too much & you are numb: we've been there too: DON'T FEEL A THING

If life is changing fast: we've been there too: I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT'S LIKE

If something is over and you need to move on: we've been there too:  GUESS I BETTER MOVE ON

If you need a role model: we've been there too: SARAH

If you are needing a miracle and need God to rescue you: we've been there too: RESCUE

So, this is sort of a reference guide for some general feelings that we’ve written songs about. What we want you to know is that you aren’t alone. If you are reading this and feel like giving up on life because it’s too hard or you’ve screwed up one too many times...you haven’t. There is always hope. Please, ask for help. Tell someone how you are really doing. If you don’t know how to start, just say “I’m not okay.”

Social media doesn’t always help because most of us really only post the highlight reel of life...the shiny, perfect, winning moments. There aren't a lot of pictures of broken hearts or pillows drenched in tears...which is fine because social media wasn’t meant for that...humans were meant for that.

We always say, “share your truth.” Speak it out loud to someone. Even if it’s a stranger on a help hotline. We promise that by verbalizing your feelings, by naming them out loud, they start to not threaten you as much. And if we’re all honest, life is hard...and these feelings that you are feeling are universal. We’ve all felt a version of them. So, we are begging you, remember, you are not alone.

We all can make a change. In our homes, communities, schools, workplaces,  neighborhoods...wherever we are. Call someone and check on them. Ask people how they are really doing. Look for the person not talking to anyone at a social event.

We think this is so important, you guys. So we are going to be having a “j&k family meeting” on FB LIVE tomorrow (WEDNESDAY 5/3) at 3pm CST to talk a little bit more about this and to play a few of these songs. Tune in.

And remember, if you are hurting and need help: we have ALL been there. You are okay and you CAN get through this. Reach out to someone. See you tomorrow.

Seriously, we love you all.

Come Back To Me #31Days2016

Come Back To Me

I still remember your voice
How it carried how I heard it above all the noise
I still remember how you touched me
Made me wanna never leave
Made me wanna never leave

You made my soul come alive
like it was the first time
Like it was the first time I
Had ever breathed and I
I wanna feel Alive I wanna feel alive tonight
So come back to me
Do what I need and come back to me

I still remember your eyes
How they'd float across the room and stare into mine
I still remember how you held me
I could feel your heart beat
I can feel your heart beat

I will open up the door
Baby I'll leave on the light
We could try it once more
Maybe we can get right

A Regular Day #31Days2016

Heyo, friends.

We landed back on our feet here in Nashville after a dream-like week at the beach. Oh yeah, we promised we wouldn't write about that anymore! :)

Today was back to the norm and it felt good to be back. We had a writing meeting aka "Co-write" with a super cool dude on the East side of Nash today. We wrote what we think turned out to be a pretty cool song...we can't wait to share our new songs with you (check out our Insta-story to see Kate working today.) If we could, we'd send them all to you right now, but alas...patience is a virtue we are working on learning. We're hoping to put out our best stuff yet when we release our next music.

Last night we had a dinner for our friend Gail who fought cancer last year, but recently got a cancer-free result from the docs. THAT'S WORTH CELEBRATING, AMIRIGHT? If you've followed us for a while, you know that we've lost some really important people in our lives to cancer...so when someone we love fights it and beats it..??? WE CELEBRATE.

This is a season to celebrate. To drink champagne. To give gifts. To accept gifts given to you. It's a season full of anticipation and expectation. Even on a regular-old-day...there is excitement in the air. We hope you are feeling that too.

Here are some more of your super awesome pics...we are loving these, you guys! Thanks for filling our lives with so much GOODNESS. Hope you had an amazing day. TTY TMW.

Much love, J&K

The Gift of Adventure (#31DaysofBlogging)

This blog is a part of a series #31DaysofBlogging … we are going through the year (2015) chronologically.

This fall we finally got back into our groove after the chaos of this year. We started writing a lot more...and we were working on a secret LULLABIES album this fall too. But we weren't just writing songs that were lullabies. We were also writing songs that reflected on our experiences throughout the year. We told you a few days ago about "Quit Worrying" which was a song that came out of the trials of this year.

But after we wrote that song, we wrote a song that was inspired by the adventures of this year. We got to have a lot of adventures this year. We went overseas to play for the troops, met tons of new friends in Canada where we got to do things like jump off cliffs and swim under waterfalls, went paddle boarding for the first time, went on last minute road trips, became adjunct law professors, and so much more.

Adventure is a gift. It can change your mindset, your morale, and your momentum.

So in November, we wrote this song called "We Go Running" all about adventure. It's about being tired of the mundane and needing a change. It's just a fun, feel-good song and we had fun writing it.

Writing songs is what we love to do. We love how therapeutic and healing it can be. We will continue to blog through the year this December, but as we begin to approach 2016, we will live by a line in the bridge of this song that says:

The best days are in front of us...and we won't stay, where we're stuck..

Maybe you need to join us in living by this motto? The end of a year/beginning of a new one is the perfect time to leave the past behind, learn from it, and move on.

See you tomorrow!

Why We Quit Worrying (#31DaysOfBlogging)

This blog is a part of a series #31DaysofBlogging … we are going through the year (2015) chronologically.

If you have been following us for a bit, you know all about Song On The 17th. We started it almost 7 years ago and it’s become a J&K tradition that is one of our favs. Is "favs" a proper word? Dunno. :)

We took a little break from SOT17th over the past year because we just needed to. Sometimes you need to change things up. (PSA: Remember that and don’t be afraid of it. Is there something you need to take a break from in your life? Do it. It’s such a relief sometimes.)

We were doing a lot. Touring with other artists. In talks of doing a reality show. Recording albums. Trying our best to live balanced lives. And SOT17th became a point of stress that we needed to just step away from for a bit. So we took 9 months off from it.

Then in September we wrote this song called “Quit Worrying” and decided, ya know what? It’s time to freaking BRING IT BACK. So we did!

The story behind Quit Worrying is so simple. It came out of a conversation we had. We realized that worrying had been sucking the life out of us recently. And we didn’t really feel like having the life sucked out of us. Even though we had circumstances surrounding us that definitely even warranted worry, it's not good for our bodies or souls and worrying WILL GET YOU NOWHERE. So, the answer was to just quit worrying. Simple enough, right? (Ha!) Right. Small steps, combatting one worryful thought at a time. When a worry creeps up, make a mental note to yourself: this is worry and I have decided to quit worrying. Make a list of affirmations/truths and keep them on your phone or write them down and keep them in your pocket. When worry pops up, fight it off with truth. Go through the affirmations. Remind yourself (lovingly) that everything will be OK. Take a moment to pray. Start listing things that you're thankful for. This, you guys, is the kicker--gratitude is such a good antidote to worry. Unlike worry, gratitude changes things.

So we started listing things we had been worrying about, then we tried to tell ourselves why it wasn’t worth worrying about such things and reminding ourselves of there truth we know:

“I’ve been worrying about everything, like if it’s right, the place I’m in....BUT IF IT’S WRONG, THEN I WILL TRY AGAIN...so I’m gonna quit worrying.
“I’ve been worrying about everything, like if I can bring enough money in...BUT MONEY WONT MATTER WHEN I'M SIX-FEET IN...so I’m gonna quit worrying.”

Like, guys. Anyone else freaked out because you take a look at your life and you thought that maybe you would be married with 2.5 kids because when you look around most of your peers are in that place and you aren't? So you begin to sink into worry about the choices you've made. Ah, but what's the truth? We are exactly where we are supposed to be in life. Having a husband and a kid doesn't make you a "whole" person.

Or--anyone else freaked out about money? Paying bills? 401k's say what? Again, reminding ourselves of truth. We are educated people. We aren't going to live on the streets. We have families that love us and won't let us starve. Plus, money doesn't make you "whole."  Crazy times when you realize your own worry is your own worst enemy.

This song was just a message we needed to tell ourselves and then once it was finished, we realized it was for everyone. Because most of us are worriers!

A lot of people emailed us about this song...a lot of people shared it on Facebook...and it was so nice to see people relate to it and feel like we were not the only ones. It’s why we do what we do...we hope to connect with other people through our music. We hope people don’t feel alone. We hope we don’t feel alone. We hope we all find one another and realize we’re all in this together. It’s so relieving to feel not alone, after thinking that you are.

We also decided to call our friend Ali Nelson to see if she would handwrite “Quit Worrying” in her amazingly cool handwriting so we could put it on shirts & hoodies and spread the message. She did this and it was AWESOME.

1.jpg

Whenever we feel like worry is creeping back in, we throw on our QUIT WORRYING hoodies and all is well. You can get one too...or a V-neck tee if you prefer...hot or cold, worry be gone.

We are glad to be back with SOT17th. We feel refreshed and ready to keep the fav tradition going. Really, think about your life and if there’s something you need to step away from for a bit, consider it. A little time away can be the renewal you need to feel fresh again down the line.

Tomorrow we’re talking about how we said YES to another friend who asked us to take a random road trip with her on a whim....find out where we ended up! xo j&k

Why We Made A LULLABIES Album

SURPRISE! We made a LULLABIES ALBUM!

You can now pre-order our brand new LULLABIES album right here, right now, with a world-wide digital release coming December 4th, 2015! When you pre-order, you receive an autographed copy of the physical album that will ship before the release, one of the tracks, “Angels Watching Over You” immediately, AND $5 of every pre-order is being donated to the amazing kids at Houses of Hope Africa.

Here is the story on why we made an album full of lullabies.

One of our best friends, Jenny, is a mom of two boys (Jackson & Micah) and she’s been asking for well over four years for us to make her an album of songs that her kids can fall asleep to. Well, she is pregnant again and so we decided now was the time. We decided to surprise her with the gift of the album at her baby shower, which happened last night (!!!) The pic was taken a minute after we surprised her!

You guys...keeping this secret was pretty much pure torture since she is one of our best friends. But, the surprise was so awesome! She didn’t know that we’ve spent the last few months writing and recording these songs and to finally be able to talk about it and share it with her and with YOU GUYS makes us SO happy.

When we started we thought, “Ok, let’s write some kids’ songs.” But as we got into the project we realized we had the opportunity to speak important words over these little ones. These are words that will play while they drift off into unconsciousness and all of a sudden we took writing this album very seriously. What do we want these little friends to know? What do we want to be reconfirmed in their hearts and minds? We have the chance to speak life, joy, dreams, and love over them. Then as the songs began to come out we realized that adults could relate to most of these messages just as much as kids. So yes, while lullabies are generally for kids, we think these songs are for the kid and the kid in the adult in all of us.

Night time can be a scary time. Just the darkness of night can sometimes feel overwhelming. It can be a time of loneliness and restlessness. Not sure if it’s this way for you, but for us, that can be the time that fear, anxiety and worry starts to creep into our minds. That’s when doubt starts to rise within us from our core. The silence and darkness can fill those voids with negative voices. Having experienced those very things firsthand, we decided to start writing from that perspective. What could be the antidote to those thoughts? What would we want spoken over our own children if we had them? What would we have wanted spoken over us when we were young? What do we want to speak over ourselves now?

Words that speak peace, unconditional love, and hope. Child-like prayers. The ability to dream big dreams and believe that anything is possible. Asking God to be near us. Words that remind us that we are safe. That we can be brave. What if we replaced the negative voices with ones of love and positivity? That’s what we wanted these songs to communicate.

We wanted this album to be different...and it is. We’ve never done anything like this before. We set out with a goal in mind that really came out of a desire to give a gift to a friend. But, like life, the outcome was different than we could’ve ever imagined.

We’ve also never released anything that no one has ever heard before. So it’s extra exciting and who doesn’t love a good surprise? Woohoo! Thank you to our amazing fans that have waited patiently for new music. Thank you for being the ones we thought of as we made this album...we kept thinking...man, we hope (fill in your name here) will like it.

We hope that this album resonates with your soul. That it lulls you to sleep. That it brings hope. That it brings peaceful sleep.

Let us all help each other walk in positivity towards the light.

Much love,

Jill and Kate

Song on the 17th--March 2014

Hey! We just wrote a brand new song called "Better" for Song on the 17th! We hope you like it :) xo j&k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxkVFJmDoCs&list=PLu48usVedYIyXtZ-a1CTGIJv5BY0JjU52

"Better"

We've been broken from the minute That we left the door open And we let love in And you know that we tried Oh how we tried

Now we're living on our own Looking for whatever we can to fill our time All this time

The drinks go down a little bit easier after the first one And my legs learn how to catch up to my body And that's how I learned how to run I learned how to run

Why do we do it alone When we could do it together Don't you think that would be better Don't you think that would be better

Why do we do it alone When we could do it together Don't you think that would be better Don't you think that would be better Better than being alone Better than being alone

We gave up too soon, too fast, too much To understand what we were leaving behind Now we're looking all around for whatever we can to make it right Make it right

The drinks go down a little bit easier after the first one Now the words come out a little too easy And that's how I learned how to hide I learned how to hide

Why do we do it alone When we could do it together Don't you think that would be better Don't you think that would be better

Why do we do it alone When we could do it together Don't you think that would be better Don't you think that would be better Better than being alone Better than being alone

Better than being alone Better than being alone Alone

And the drinks go down a little bit easier after the first one

Why do we do it alone When we could do it together Don't you think that would be better Don't you think that would be better

Why do we do it alone When we could do it together Don't you think that would be better Better than being alone Better than being alone

New Song On February 17th, 2014 "Nick + Jess"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpozk_4w1H4 Hey! This is a brand new song inspired by the TV show New Girl! We hope you like it :) Much love, j&k

Nick + Jess

You like your whiskey old and neat I don't mind cheap wine You don't dare to start an argument I need to fight to feel alive

But I think you might be (3x) Just right for me

Your shelves are filled with books and you've read them all Takes me a year to finish one You could settle down in just one place Me I'm always on the run

But I think you might be (3x) Just right for me

You could talk for hours I'd rather sing But we get caught up in each other And I'll admit When your hand touches mine my heart just sinks And I can't help but think

That you might be

I think you might be (3x) Just right for me

We're All Getting Older

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRLsHfy4YrM

"We're All Getting Older"

I've been thinking about this world What it means to be alive I got cold and hard and jaded Somewhere down the line

But I am picking up my messes Trying to forgive and forget Time is short and I am thinking I might be Better off without regrets

Cause were all getting older We're all getting older

I've got faces burned in my brain Old loves and old enemies I've been ignoring them all of these days Been so afraid of what they'd say to me

If I get to look them in the eyes Gonna scream and smile and hurt and cry Someday I am gonna die I want them to know everything I held inside

Cause were all getting older We're all getting older

Go see your mother and your father Get on a plane, pick up the phone Call your sister and your brother It's time you finally got along

Cause were all getting older We're all getting older

New Song on the 17th "Letters & Cards" (September 2013)

Here is our new song for our Song on the 17th series! It's a little country-pop love song...hope you guys like it! xo j&k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoI9myteET8

"Letters & Cards"

Just four months have passed Since you told that joke and I watched you laugh You called me sooner than I thought you would We danced our nights away

I felt you take you my hand You kissed me with our feet in the sand The days flew by so fast Our friends said it would never last

The kids are going back to school The flowers are fading from their summer bloom I can't stand leaving you

And how will we know If this is love With these miles in between us Will our words be enough Will you write letters Will I send cards Will our hearts stay true underneath these stars Will we both lie awake alone in the dark Wondering if this is love

I still smell your skin On your shirt I'm wrapped up in I remember that night We laid in the grass, watched the planes fly by

The kids are going back to school The flowers are fading from their summer bloom I can't stand leaving you

And how will we know If this is love With these miles in between us Will our words be enough Will you write letters Will I send cards Will our hearts stay true underneath these stars Will we both lie awake alone in the dark Alone in the dark Wondering if this is love

Were those months enough To have something real Are we strong enough To show how we feel

And how will we know this is love

And how will we know If this is love With these miles in between us Will our words be enough Will you write letters Will I send cards Will our hearts stay true underneath these stars Will we both lie awake alone in the dark Alone in the dark Wondering if this is love

New Song on March 17th, 2013 "Best For You"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJAn6L4Dx1o Best For You

I've heard the things you've said about me Cause everybody talks in this tiny town And You're throwing your words all around You never did learn how to shut your mouth

You're a sad little boy You got nothing to show After 10 long years On a dead end road If you stayed up high Well you might have made it But you're so afraid of loneliness You're digging your grave

And I still wish the best for you There are days that I miss you And I still wish there was something I could say or do I still wish the best for you

I see your face in a photograph Hanging on the wall in white and black And I can't take it down It's the one with your arms wrapped around my neck

We were perfect for each other we were one in the same Now your running with the others and you're bashing my name It must be hard to be so afraid But I still love you at the end of the day

If all my love was wasted If all you said was never true If all my love was wasted At least I wasted it on you

(c) Jill and Kate, 2013.

New Song on June 17th, 2012 "In Love Again"

IN LOVE AGAIN

So it's really over I told you not to call Told you don't come over Don't act interested at all I'm beaten up and bruised from you dragging me along And so it's really over I finally made the call

I pulled out of your driveway and drove off of your street Looked at all your pictures then I hit delete Made up the bed on the side you used to sleep I tore up all your letters they're burning as I speak

And I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again Love is a dangerous game I lose every time that I play I don't want to fall I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again

So it's really over I left you at your door I'm back inside my house but my heart is on your floor I would've said forever but you never wanted more So this is the ending you always had in store

I wanted you to fight to fall down on your knees Tell me not to go and beg me not to leave But hollow were your eyes and empty was your stare You echoed my goodbye like you never even cared

And I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again Love is a dangerous game I lose every time that I play I don't want to fall I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again

I broke every bone I had fighting Took the fall to keep us alive You swore to me you were trying Don't lie don't lie

And I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again Love is a dangerous game I lose every time that I play I don't want to fall I don't want to fall I don't want to fall in love again

Stuck.

This post is for all of our fellow creators, writers (both story & song) and anyone that is looking for a little exercise in getting the creative juices flowing. Cause let's be honest...we all at times have a little bit of writer's block or writer's barricade or writer's great wall of China for peet's sake--that's what it feels like sometimes. One time we were at a song-writing workshop where a well-known songwriter was talking about his experiences, his go-to things while songwriting and he shared something that has stuck with us. At first it might sound silly but it does get the creative juices going if there seems to be a blockage of some sort.

So, if you are feeling stuck, try this exercise. All you need is:

  • a piece of paper
  • a pen or pencil
  • a timer
  • a book or a friend

Get yourself set up to write. Set the timer for 7 minutes. Find a book or ask a friend for ANY word (or if you don't have a friend around, take any random book, open it and put your finger down and whatever word your finger lands on...go with it). Then whatever word you get, write about it for 7 minutes. It doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't have to rhyme...just write about the word for 7 minutes. Write, write, write.

This sounds easy...and it might seem like a silly exercise but it's a great one! In the workshop he had us all do this and the word was "dust." After it was over, to demonstrate his point that everyone will think of something different he had some people share what they wrote. All of the different things were amazing...someone wrote about the dust on library books, someone wrote about their little league memories of dust rising over them as they slid onto home plate, someone wrote about the dust particles in the room... It was so cool. Everyone had a different take on the word "dust."

Anyway--writing is definitely a practice and this can be a good way to start practicing writing. Whatever you write be proud of it. Don't think it's stupid. Don't think it's insignificant. Don't put boundaries on your writing. Just write. Write. Write.

Cool? Cool. Now go write :)

Songwriting.

Songwriting is the best thing ever. It's hard work...even when songs come easily...you still have to work hard at them. But man...when you get going and you get something you like and other people like....it's the best feeling in the world. It's like a drug. We've been writing a lot as we're getting ready to record this week... If you don't know these songs, stop what you're doing and go listen to them right now:

-"Stay" by Lisa Loeb

-"Stolen Car" by Patty Griffin *written by Bruce Springsteen

-"Waiting Around to Die" by Townes Van Zandt

It's January 5th people...who's still working at their goals? Hope so. If not, that's cool too. It's only day five :) Haha.

More answers to more questions in the very near future.

Miss you like a fat kid misses cake.
