q&a

One Last Thing

We've done this before on another post called One Last Thing and it was pretty fun, so let's do it again.

The Last Time I Cried:

Jill: Believe it or not, watching the commercials during the Olympics. The actual events make me a little emotional as well, but those dang commercials get me every time.

Kate: The other night in my bunk. I was having an overwhelmed/girlie/crymy eyes out moment…I was listening to depressing music…aka…”Farewell” by Rosie Thomas…hadn’t cried that hard in awhile…kinda felt good to get it all out.

Last Greeting Card I Sent:

Jill: My brother’s birthday was July 31 and I sent him a funny Awkward Family Photos Card. I love those. I could stand in the greeting card aisle all day and read funny cards.

Kate: Well…I haven’t sent it yet…it’s been in my bag for months. It’s hysterical though. It’s got a girl sitting on a donkey on the front that says ” Nothing much happening around here.” Then inside it says…”Just sitting around on my ass and thinking of you.” Hysterical. I just need to actually send it to someone.

Last Indulgence:

Jill: We were home for 16 hours and I made Ghirardelli Double Chocolate brownies. Delicious.

Kate: A Vitamix. I LOVE smoothies so having a Vitamix makes it ten times easier to make. They are kind of very pricey…but I see it as an investment in my health…haha…

Last Song That Made Me Rock Out:

Jill: Eye of The Tiger. We were on the Pedal Tavern in Nashville for our friend Ashley’s birthday (it’s a 16 person bicycle-powered party on wheels) and when that song came on we all rocked it out and made it up the giant hill. It was quite a moment.

Kate: “Eyes Wide Open” by Gotye..I was driving by myself. I cranked it up and sang along. Maybe not so “rock out” but still fun!

Last TV Show I Watched:

Jill: Bunheads. It’s my new favorite show. If you liked Gilmore Girls, you have to watch this show. That Amy Sherman-Palladino knows what she’s doing.

Kate: The new Matthew Perry show GO ON. I LOVED IT!!! It’s free on iTunes right now! Check it out.

More of your questions...answered.

Happy Saturday! Here are some questions that you guys asked us wayyyyy back in the day--we are answering them little by little!

Hope you have a fun weekend.

-j&k

Anakellya: What is the best part about your job?

Traveling, doing what we love, meeting great people...those are just a few. There a lot of really GREAT things about our job!

Emma (she's got a few questions): 1. What are your fave songs of all time and why?

Jill: "Stay" by Lisa Loeb. It's simply my favorite song ever written.

Kate: I hate this question....I stew over it for hours...I would have to say "Top of the World" by Patty Griffin.

2. Edward Cullen or Bill Compton (True Blood)?

Edward. (Neither of us have seen True Blood...so I guess Edward has an unfair advantage.)

3. Is there a difference between UK and US fans?

Yes. The UK fans seem to have this crazy accent going on. What's that about?? :) Just kidding. We love all fans the same.

4. Please will u do a UK gig for us soon? (Louise asked this too)

We hope to. Seriously. We miss those accents.

Jen: Can fans only get your songs off Youtube and will you guys ever do your own concert?

Fans can get our songs on iTunes or order our CD's from our new online store! And yes...we just played on July 1st and are hoping to do some more shows soon! Check back to our blog soon to see when we might play a last minute show near you!

Stephany: 1.What was your reaction at all the press you ladies received for NSOT17th for The Climb?

It was crazy! Who knew it would get press at all? We love that song and are glad other people seemed to like that video. :)

2. If you could go back in time to see how they were as a kid who would you chose between Jason, Cory, Einar, Ric, Miles, or Aben?

Jill: Einar for sure. Oooh...Miles would be a good option too. The best would be to see all of them hanging out together as kids. Haha. That would be a good time.

Kate: Hmm....I would say Miles...he's so entertaining to watch as an adult I can only imagine his energy as a child :)

3. How do your families feel about you guys being away for long periods of time?

How could they not miss these faces? But in all seriousness, both of our families are very supportive of what we do. We have both been blessed with really great families.

Lauren: What I'd like to know is do you have a favorite inspirational quote and also who inspires you, what inspires you?

Jill: I love this quote from the movie "The Answer Man" which I think we've blogged about before. Lauren Graham's character says that there are three rules she lives by:

1. Don't take advice from someone you wouldn't trade places with.

2. Try not to do something you can't take back.

3. Something is what it is and it's not something else.

I also am inspired by Emily Dickinson poems and Patty Griffin songs. Most of all, I think I mostly find inspiration in the people around me. You usually don't have to look to far to find inspiring people.

Kate: There is a book called "Who You Are When No One's Looking" and the whole premise is that 'character' is who you are when no one's looking. I love that. Also I get tons of inspiration from other blogs that I read (I'm kind of a nerd-haha) but there is something about people being honest in the situations they find themselves in...whether it's motherhood or decorating... I love reading all different blogs.

Ashley: What's your absolute favorite song to perform live?

Jill: Finding My Own Way or Pop Song.

Kate: "You Might Break My Heart" on the piano.

Elizabeth: What did you guys do for NYE? Did you get to spend it in nashville or at home with your fam?

New Year's was in Nashville this year and pretty low key. We'd been traveling SO much that it was nice to just chill at home. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More questions to come--slowly, but surely. :)

j&k

Questions, Questions, Questions!!

So you guys are  driving down the roads of Nashville and and BAM a KC song comes on the radio. Do you switch it? Belt it out like Kelly would? Or sing back up? Hahah!  --Lizzy Hmm....since we get to hear the lovely songs so often I would say we generally change the channel...or we giggle and sing at the top of our lungs and roll the windows down.  Depends on the mood.

When can we expect a new JillandKate album? And how was JillandKate formed?? --Michelle

Well, we are right in the middle of recording a new project...so we are not sure when exactly we'll release it. But, if all goes well...sometime this year! Woohoo!  We can't wait for you guys to hear the new stuff! "jillandkate" was formed when we met at a music program in college...we've been working together for 7 years...wowza!

Can you tell me what you would have done if someone told you "you can't sing, music is not for you, find something else to do?" Have you always believed in you and in your singing and music skills ? Have you got any advice for self-confidence? --Charlotte

Well Charlotte...people will tell you all sorts of things. You generally need to examine who is telling you those sorts of things. Sometimes people will speak out of their own insecurity and try and make you feel the same insecurity. Only take advice from people that love you and want the best for you. As for your second question...NO! Haha...I think every artist doubts themselves from time to time...sometimes more often than not, but I really think that's just par for the course for any artist type. When you love doing something and people affirm you in that, go forward and be confident in yourself. You are unique. There's no one else with your experiences and you have something to offer to the world.

My question is are you guys are coming to Los Angeles, California for the All I Ever Wanted tour? --Kelly

Sadly...no. Sorry :(

Where I can find your song lyrics? --Max

Max! We are working on re-designing our website and on that site we will have all of our song lyrics. Sorry that you've been searching with no luck...we'll let you know as soon as we post them!

Its none of our business but my friends and I are wondering if you all have boyfriends? --Mary

Well, true...it's none of your business but currently we are both currently boyfriendless.

What is your best and worst habit(s)? In a previous Q&A session, you revealed that "Stained" was the first song you two wrote together. What are the lyrics and/or meaning behind the song? --Selena

Kate: I think one of my habits is both good and bad. I multi-task constantly. Which is great when I want to get a lot of things done, but sometimes because of my multi-tasking, I tend not to be in the moment or focus on one thing.

Jill: I'm a little OCD with things. Aren't we all? I have to count telephone poles and headlights when I'm driving. I annoy myself with that.

Stained was the first song we wrote together over 7 years ago. It was about being negatively affected by a relationship and how that in turn affects all of your other relationships.

What would you say to someone who's written a bunch of songs and doesn't know what steps to take?  What are your favorite five music videos of all time? --Erin

Erin, if you have a lot of songs, play them for as many people as possible. Look for honest people in your life that will tell you the truth...seriously...you need people who say, "I love you, but that's a horrible song." Haha...it's hard to have your creative works critiqued because art is really all subjective...but you have to examine your personal goals. If you want to write songs for other artists that you hear on the radio, listen to those songs, use commonalities from those songs to help you see what made them popular. Kate's favorite video of all time is Janet Jackson's "If" and Jill's favorite video is "Waterfalls" by TLC. Three of our other favorites are "Disturbia" by Rihanna, "Beverly Hills" by Weezer, and of course "Barbie Girl" by Aqua.

Do you girls have a certain time where you sit down and write or is it whenever you get something in your head? --Bianca

It's pretty much whenever we feel like it. We do sit down from time to time intentionally to go over songs or edit them...that sometimes feels like pulling teeth. It's much easier to write when you feel inspired.

My friends and i were wondering what your most crazy insane fan story is? --Bre

We think it's insane when people go out of their way to come to see us live. When we hear that people take plane rides, bus rides, trains, cars or walk to see a show it literally blows our minds. We feel so honored that people would want to make all that effort. It's truly humbling.

So my question is if maybe y'all could ask around like other musicians and stuff cause i was wondering if the Berklee school of music is a good choice for me to go, or if you recommend some other place? --Myra

We've had friends that have gone there. It's definitely a great school!

What are your favorite games and books? --Monique

Games: Yahtzee, Scrabble, Phase 10, Quiddler to name a few. Books: "The Time Travellers Wife" The Twilight Series, "Loose Girl."

What is your favorite disney movie?  --Melissa

Kate: "Cinderella" & "The Little Mermaid"

Jill: "The Lion King" and "The Little Mermaid." Oh and "Toy Story." I pretty much like them all.

Are you afraid of the dark? When was the last time you cried? When the alarm clock rings, do you get out of bed immediatley? (I need 30 mins) Drink of choice? --Lizita

Kate: I used to be TERRIFIED of the dark. Like so, so, so scared. Somehow I just sort of got over it. Weird. The last time I cried was last night. When my alarm goes off I snooze at least once, or three times...hehe. I'm assuming you are speaking of alcoholic drink of choice? Vanilla vodka & coke.

Jill: I'm not generally afraid of the dark...unless I just watched a scary movie...then sometimes I can be. I cried last night. Oddly enough, I'm usually not much of a crier. I need a bunch of snoozes...I don't enjoy getting out of bed. haha. Drink of choice would be Strawberry vodka with sprite. Also you can't go wrong with a Mudslide.

Can you guys release an EP every couple of months because i need some more jillandkate? --Luciano

That is VERY sweet of you. But I think if we did that, you'd soon have to visit us in a mental hospital because that would be WAY too much work. Haha...also, we don't want you to get sick of us!

How many stamps do you have in your passport? What brand of eye makeup remover do you use? --Holly

A LOT!!! Jill needs new pages in her passport! They almost didn't let her leave Jakarta. Haha! Almay's Make-Up Remover pads are awesome (oily & non-oily ones) or Kiehls super gentle make-up remover.

When is your(j&k) album coming out?? --Bonnie

Bonnie...this year sometime! We can't wait to get it done!

We have all the answers.

Actually, no we don't. We don't have all the answers. But we do have some more answers to the questions you've been asking: When you are singing your songs do you always/ever think about the person who you wrote them about while performing the certain song? -Stash

It's different for us every time we perform. There are definitely times when you are  singing a song and you go right back to the reason or person that you wrote the song. If you perform a song a lot it can evolve and take on different roles.  Example: If the original reason for writing "Song X" was because two years ago the guy you were dating was a really big douche, two years later while performing that same song you might be really angry about something totally different but still be able to relate your feelings of anger through a song that was about your douchey ex. Hope that made sense. It's different every night.

Are you planning any shows in England? -Hev

Hev...we would LOVE to play some shows in England. You folks are so kind and have been so supportive of our music--not sure when but we will play a J&K in the UK/Europe at some point. Deal? Deal.

You must have a decent amount of time on the tour bus. How do you pass the time? Are you watching seasons of LOST with Jason? What TV shows are you catching up on? I think you should watch Friday Night Lights. -Laura

We do have a lot of time on the bus. We play a LOT of games. Yahtzee, Scrabble, Strip-Poker (haha),  Sequence, Quiddler, Phase 10, Skip-Bo... we also watch movies from time to time. We have deep discussions about religion, philosophy,  and food :) We didn't watch LOST with Jason.  But we are watching 24 & The West Wing from the beginning.  That's right. Seven seasons of both shows from the beginning. All we can say about 24 is: All hail the power of Bauer :) And CJ on The West Wing is hilarious in a really dry way. Great shows. Thank you for the Friday  Night Lights recommendation. We'll check it out.

Why arent you guys coming to Adelaide when you come to Australia?- Tj

Tj. We have no idea. Sorry. We just get told where to go and when :) That's probably not a good enough answer for you but that's all we got.

Who's the funniest and craziest out of the two of u?? And how old are u guys? -Shay

Shay...very cool name btw. We are both 27. Representing the year 1982...holla! How could you pick one of us to be funnier than the other?? Couldn't do it. We are both very, very crazy and sometimes that craziness makes us funny :)

Just want to know, How can I pray for you?- Jasmine

Jasmine you are so sweet. Safety & health. Yup. Thanks for the prayers. Prayer definitely changes things :)

I was just wondering if you could post a big list of singers/bands or songs (both old and new-er) that you guys have on your iPod? -Dylan

We'll just put some highlights of regular things we listen to...here's a giant list from both of our iTunes collections:

-Tracy Chapman

-Bon Iver

-Dan Auerbach

-Alanis Morissette

-Keith Urban

-Joy Williams (and The Civil Wars)

-Over the Rhine

-Peter Gabriel

-Kings of Leon

-Patty Griffin (of course)

-Gretel

-Jay-Z

-Miranda Lambert

-Saving Jane

-Steve Moakler

-The Weepies

-Eagles

It could go on and on, but that's a good start...

Seems you girls have a diverse love of musicians (Mariah cary, Patty Griffin, to Jay-z, etc...), but lately, quite a few of your songs have all had a similar sound to them. Can we expect you girls to venture outside the comfort zone a bit on the next record? -Jackie

Actually that question is a great way to announce that our next album is going to be Latin-Fusion-R&B-Soul-Folk-Pop-Hardcore-Instrumental-Rap album. Who's excited? Haha. And I (kate) am also going to be recording all of my vocal parts while hula-hooping...how out of the comfort zone is that?? :)

-j&k-

A few more answered questions.

Who cooks in the house? -Leea I'm gonna have to say me. Kate. I love cooking. It's therapeutic for me in a weird way. I don't get to do it often because we aren't ever home, but I love the sense of control I have being able to do it myself. I may or may not be a control freak at times. I love it though. Chopping everything up. Watching things sizzle. Yup. Good times. My mom is a ridiculously good cook...she's the best. When my friends and I would come over to my house for a break in college she'd have fresh baked cookies ready and put chocolates on our pillows. No joke. My mom is incredible. I can't say enough good things about her.

How did both of you meet? -Michelle

We met at a music program (The Contemporary Music Center) during college in January 2003 in Martha's Vineyard, MA. One of these blogs we will give you the whole spiel...Schpeeeel if you will.

What place are you most looking forward to visiting in 2010? Where do you go on vacation? Whats your favourite word? -Jason

Kate: I don't think I have one specific place I'm most looking forward to visiting...there are so many great things about all the places we are going :) I've never been to New Zealand though and am pretty excited I get to see it. I hear it's like heaven. I'll let you know. Home is where I like to go on vacation...haha...when you are gone so much, sleeping in your own bed and making coffee in your own kitchen can be the best vacation ever. But when I like to get away I am very much a tropical girl. Hawaii, somewhere in the Caribbean....give me a beach, some chips & salsa and a frozen fruity drink and that's pretty much the description of the most perfect vacation...oh and a good book of course. I don't think I have a favorite word. Hmmm...nope. Don't think I have one...if ever I find my favorite word I'll be sure to blog about it.

Jill: I love Australia. I always have fun going there so I think that is where I'm most looking forward to going this year. Kate was right. Home is the BEST place for vacation...whether it be Nashville-home or New Hampshire-home where I grew up. Okay okay, if I must pick a REAL place, I loved Maui when I went there a few years ago. My favorite word is: AWKWARD. I love spelling it out. I love words. I love palindromes and weirdly spelled words and everything to do with words.

Did either of you have a crush on Zack Morris (Saved By The Bell) or was A.C. Slater more your type? :) -Amy

Such an original question....well done Amy. Definitely Zack Morris. Come on. No contest. -kate

Did any girl NOT have a crush on Zack Morris? A.C. Slater was cool, but Zack is...i mean WAS my definite crush. -jill

Any beauty product must haves for you two? Is Kelly really a cool, down to earth person like she seems? -Stephanie

Beauty products...umm...concealer, some eye liner and some lip gloss can do wonders in under 5 minutes. True story. We have to wear so much make-up for stage that on off days we generally don't wear a lot of make-up or any for that matter :) Yes, Kelly is unbelievably kind, brilliant, normal, super funny--we are honored to sing with her.

What is the one thing you most enjoy doing when you are on the road? -Jennifer

Kate: I love taking pictures out on the road or taking little videos. It's a great way to document all of the things we get to do--sometimes I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday so I think it'll come in handy in 50 years to have some pics and videos to remind me of what went on back in the day.

Jill: I love to steal Kate's pictures because I am not so good at documenting. :) Also I read a lot, watch TV series, and write for fun. Oh, I mean...party so hard...yeah. Haha no...we are not really party hard people. There are cool people on the road too so it's fun to hang out with everybody.

More things you might not know about jillandkate...

Two questions from someone who didn't leave their name... What is your favorite episode of Gilmore Girls and your favorite character? (it has to be Loralie btw) :)

Of course our favorite character is Lorelai!

Jill's favorite episode is "Raincoats and Recipes" in season 4. (Yes, I had to look that up...I didn't know the title by heart.) I am not going to give away what happens for anyone who has yet to experience the magic of GG.

Kate's favorite episode is: Ooohhh...I don't know if I have a favorite but I like the one where Lorelai calls her mom and pretends to leave a voicemail when her mom is actually on the phone...it's pretty funny.

Next question from another no-namer:

Are you still going to be touring with Kelly in 2010?

Yup and we are excited to kick off the European tour in less than 2 weeks...we've never been to Ireland before so can't wait to start the tour in Dublin! Less than 2 weeks people...less than 2 weeks!!!!!!

From Melissa:

1) Jill, are you ever going to share chords to y'alls songs with us? Covering your stuff would be so much easier! ;)

I didn't know this was a request...I'll see what I can do! :)

2) When you write a song, do you have a certain process? Do you write lyrics & melody first or the music? Or vice versa? OR...does it just depend?

It totally depends, but I'd say most of the time for us it starts with a lyric idea. Then we usually pick up the guitar or sit at the piano and build it from there. Then again, sometimes we'll have a whole song idea with no lyrics. You never can tell how a song will be written. That's what makes it so exciting.

Natalia from Poland asks:

1) I know you guys visit a lot of European countries but you've never been to Poland ( my beautiful country :) So my question is  what comes to your mind when you think of Poland? Do you have any  associations with this country? And we have great vodka here so you should come haha!

Well, now you have us thinking of Vodka when we think of Poland...haha...anyway...hmm...when I think of Poland, I think of long last names that end in 'ski' :) Maybe we'll make it to Poland sometime and make some Polish memories...and maybe they will include Polish vodka.

2) Which member of KC's band do you find the most attractive ?  And I know they all have wives and girlfriends but it's just a question:) So please tell us:) They are all pretty hot so I guess that would be a hard decision to make:)

Oh, they're all so handsome and charming, how could we choose? :)

From Linda:

Now that you live in Nashville... music city, do you find yourself any more inspired?

Yes. Nashville is amazing. There are crazy talented people here and on any given night you can see inspiring shows all over town. What a great place to live. Love, love, love Nashville.

From Erin:

I'm feening!!! I'm stuck on a stupid island and nobody ever comes to Hawaii! Will you guys ever make an appearence on Oahu?

Oh my gosh...can we PLEASE come to Hawaii? We LOVE Hawaii and feel as strongly as you do about making an appearance there. Let's make that happen, okay? Okay.

Anakellya asks:

Jill and Kate, are you morning or night people? (:

Night night night night night. :)

Do you ever get emotional when singing a song that you've written that's really personal? Does it ever bring you back to that moment and to how you were feeling?

Yeah, definitely. For instance, everytime we play East Coast Bound, I miss home and the Atlantic ocean. :) -j

From Cate:

Where can u purchase cheap car insurance??? Lol only joking! My actual question has much more standing and importance...when you's are in Dublin have you's a drinking hole sorted for before or after the show!? Just making sure that you get a proper impression of what life is like in the green isle when you come in Feburary!

Well, we've heard that 15 minutes can save you 15% or more on your car insurance at GEICO! Just kidding. We don't know any of the cool drinking holes in Dublin, so give us the scoop won't you? We are very excited about Ireland...have we mentioned that?

From Jamie:

Can I sell merch at your next show pretty please with cherries on top? And did my open mic attempt make you cry with how awful it was? :)

Haha, with cherries on top? Well you must really want to then. Haha. Your open mic was fun...as they all were! Everyone who did it was so brave...I don't think any of us would have been that brave. Kudos.

Noelle from Vegas asks:

1.) What songs are on your iPods that you would be embarassed for people to know you have?

Well, I'm not necessarily embarrassed of this, but it's something that I definitely get made fun of for...I have a few Hanson albums on my iPod. You can laugh if you must. :) -jill

I am embarrassed that I own the Pussycat Dolls song "Beep". It's the only song I own from their wide catalogue of though-provoking songs--I hate the lyrics but for some reason it found it's way into my iTunes collection and I haven't deleted it yet. Hmmm... -kate

2.) Are you ladies going to perform in Vegas at some point? Because I know I'd be front and center if you ever do :)

Did you not hear that we are opening a new J&K Cirque de Soleil show in Vegas this year? Just kidding...if we ever perform in Vegas, we'll let ya know.

3.) If you had the opportunity to have a  deep conversation with someone about anything, who would it be and what do you think you would talk about? (It can be someone dead it alive)

For me it would be my great grandmother. She died when I was 11, but I have great memories of her and would love to pick her brain about my family history, what life was like for her in the 1900's and just have a cup of coffee with her now that I'm grown up. -jill

I'd want to talk to Bono when he was 20. -k

From Jenna:

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Jill: Invisibility.

Kate: Definitely SuperGirl. Like Phoebe.

From Monica:

What type of students were you in school? What kind of activities did you participate in?

Jill: Well, I did alright in school, but I have no memory of doing homework ever. I don't know how I pulled that off...or maybe I just blocked it out, but I literally cannot EVER remember doing homework. I did well in English and languages, but was absolutely HORRIBLE in math and science. I hated them...Can you say right-brained? Also, I skipped a LOT of classes in college. Nap-time was so much more interesting to me. :) But don't tell your parents I told you that. Stay in school and study hard! (haha) But don't forget to enjoy life and not take school TOO seriously.

Kate: I was a pretty good student I guess...I definitely enjoyed the social aspect of it all a bit more than the studying part...haha...I went to school on 3 different continents & one island. Yup. True story.

Which song of yours are you most proud of? And which is your favorite to sing live?

I don't know if I'm most proud of any song in particular--they all mean something different to me. I'm assuming it's like parenting...you can't pick your favorite kid. Haha...well at least you're not supposed to :) My favorite song to sing live would probably be Finding My Own Way. -k

Ditto what Kate said on the first part...and my favorite song to sing live is probably either East Coast Bound or You Never Know.

Do you have any fears or phobias?

Kate: I HATE birds. Don't ask me why but I HATE birds. My phobia is being surrounded by birds. I HATE birds. And small spaces or heights.

Jill: I have a phobia of being around Kate WHEN she's surrounded by birds. You people have NO idea.

Have any of those hair ties left, Jill? Haha

I do, actually! Thanks for those...they have lasted a long time...I actually just got to the second pack!

8675309

So, I (kate) made some killer guacamole tonight. It was delicious. I love Mexican food. Yes. Yes. Haha. So, now we are answering more questions. The questions we are getting into are just getting funnier and funnier--you come up with some weird questions :) We've gotten so many I think we are going to be answering questions until Christmas. One more thing before we start answering questions... I recently read Selena Gomez's twitter and it said this: "2010, the year of no fear." I like that. No fear people. No fear. Walk on the wild side of no fear. You'll be amazed at what you stumble upon. Ok, enough rambling...the questions: I believe that the "spork" is one of the best inventions ever.  What are your thoughts? How many different instruments do you play?  List. What is the best part of your job?  My daughter, Keragan (6 years old), wanted to know if you like Spongebob? -Rhonda

Rhonda. Thank you for asking the important questions here :) The spork. For those of you who don't know what a spork is, here is a visual aid.

Now, Rhonda, contrary to what you might think of us...we don't really have super strong feelings about the spork, BUT we are happy that it makes you so happy. It does solve the spoon/fork dilemma that we all face from time to time so that's pretty awesome. Good question. Jill plays the guitar, piano and killer Rockband drums. Kate plays a little piano, guitar and a wicked triangle. The best part of our job is that we get to play & write music, travel and get to meet crazy people all the time. And last but not least Keragan, you'll be happy to know that we are both very fond of Spongebob...and Patrick too. :)

What's your favorite food? What's your favorite color? What's your favorite song you've ever written? What did ya'll major in? What did you do before you were KC's backup singers? What's your favorite actress? -Erin

Kate's favorite food is chips and salsa--and guacamole as mentioned above :)  Jill's favorite food is Spaghetti or Thai...haha...she loves noodles...oh and chocolate of course. Jill's favorite color is orange, Kate's is pink. Kate's favorite song she's ever written is a new one called "Don't Feel A Thing." Jill's favorite song she's ever written is "Finding My Own Way." We both majored in Communications. That's right. We can communicate like no one's business. (haha) Before we sang with Kelly we were still "jillandkate"---we played shows & wrote music and worked a plethora of awesome odd jobs. Kate's favorite actress is Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock. Jill's favorite actress is Sandra Bullock.

Who was your favorite artist/band in 2009? Who's music could you absolutely not live without?  Has anybody's music, whether it is a solo artist, band, song, etc. completely changed your life or made you have a different outlook on something? Are you going to watch the LOST season finale? Favorite movie of all time? -Christina

Kate's answers: favorite band of 2009 would probably have to be Kings of Leon. I could not live without Patty Griffin's music. She is a genius. Her song "Top of the World" definitely changed me. I love that song. I'm probably not going to watch the LOST finale--maybe someday but I've only watched Season 1 and part of Season 2 so I need to catch up before I watch the series finale :) Favorite movie of all time??? I hate this question. I never know what to say and I always feel that people judge me based off of my movie choices. So don't judge me please. These movies don't say anything about me or maybe they do...who knows. So here we go... "First Wives Club" or "The Rock."

Jill's answers: My favorite artist of 2009 is probably Miranda Lambert. She's really just all around a great artist. I'm gonna agree with Kate and say that I could not live without Patty Griffin's music. Her new album comes out this month and I'm overly excited about it. Her music has definitely changed my life...it's so incredibly amazing. I am not caught up on LOST either...oops...guess I need to get on that! Favorite movie of all time is The Sound of Music. I have watched it hundreds...maybe even thousands of times. :)

Not really a question for your blog but I wanted to know what are the chances of you guys doing a show when you're in Melbourne next year? -Alison

Alison, we are trying to work out a show in the land down under. It's definitely on our goal list. We are thankful that if we do play there we can count on you coming. So if we do come--you are in charge of marketing. Deal? Deal. Okay awesome. Sweet.

I was wondering what you both love about the UK and is there anything you're looking forward to seeing/doing/eating when you get here? How did you girls celebrate New Year? -Dani

I  (Kate) love the architecture in the UK and love taking walks and exploring the cities we end up in. Taking pictures of the random places we are in overseas is always a hobby too.

I (Jill) love the taxis, the hats that the doormen wear, and the breakast. The UK has amazing breakfast!

We were in Nashville for New Year's Eve. We were crazy, wild people. HA. Just kidding. In some people's eyes we were lame--call us lame if you want--we don't care--we were at home--which we are NEVER at home so that was AWESOME!

What was yall's best moment ever? How excited are yall to be getting ready to record?!?!? -Mary

Best moment ever??? That's a pretty monumental question Mary. Hmmm... This picture describes one of the best moments ever...seeing Amy Grant and Vince Gill at the Ryman. The picture is blurry but you get the idea. Thanks to Jason Halbert for snapping a pic on his phone of our faces when they walked out on stage.

We are VERY excited about recording. Like, ridiculously excited. It's hard work and can take hours upon hours of tedious work, but it's so worth it. Love the studio.

Where can I get an I pick jk tshirt? -Noreen

Noreen. Cool name, btw. We are going to start selling them online soon...sooooooon. So when we do, we'll let you know. For sure. Promise. Cross our hearts.

Kate, when you come home to Chicago, where are your favorite places to go? Jill, how long have you been playing the guitar and the piano?  Was it something your parents suggested you learn or was that all you? Where do you get your inspiration for writing? -Ashley C.

One of my favorite places to go in Chicago is a place called Graham's. They have THE BEST root beer floats. I didn't really even like root beer floats until I started having them there...they are delicious. My dad and I go there everytime I come home for the holidays. It's special.

I (Jill) have been playing the piano since I was 8 and the guitar since I was 11. I think my mom and my great-grandmother suggested I take piano lessons and after that I decided to pick up the guitar. I took the Suzuki method of piano which is learning how to play by ear so I don't read music hardly at all. Haha...lame, I know! But I love both instruments.

Look no further than yourself and the people around you for inspiration in songwriting. People are definitely the biggest inspiration for us when it comes to writing songs. People who you love, people who hurt you, people you want to hurt (haha), people that you see making mistakes or when you make a mistake, when you grieve, when you lose, when you love...all of those things can inspire songs.

Is there any date yet that we can expect a new EP or album? -Amanda

We are just beginning the recording process right now so we have no solid idea when we will be releasing anything. But, don't make a frownie face just yet Amanda. We will keep you in the loop and completely involved in the process. When we know something, you'll know something. :)

What is your favorite song by another artist ever? -JenMichelle

Kate's favorite song is "Top of the World" by Patty Griffin. Jill's is "Stay" by Lisa Loeb.

Favorite character on Friends? which Girl-? Guy-? The one question we've all wanted to know.....Is that golf picture really of Kate? -Pam

Kate's are Phoebe & Ross...Jill's are Phoebe & Chandler. HAHA. For those of you who are new to the blog--we believe this is the picture in reference:

Yes that is me in the golf picture. That's right people...I've got some muscle somewhere. Haha. Happy now? Alrighty, that's all for now peeps. Keep checking in. Lots of fun to be had.

-j&k-

Badda-Bing--Badda-Boom...

What is your most played song on iTunes? Who's idea was it to combine your names and make it jillandkate? -Myriam Jill's most played song is "Can I Still Come Over?" by Gretel. Kate's most played song is "Poison & Wine" by The Civil Wars. We can't really remember who came up with putting our names together...we were trying to come up with something and we just kinda settled on jillandkate. We wanted something simple--easy for people to remember.

Kate, since you were born in Germany: do you speak German? What’s your favorite thing to do online? What's the funniest or strangest rumor you have heard about yourself? Do you have any weird talents? -Sarah

Yes, I speak a tiny, little bit of German. I actually understand a bit more than I speak--which is awesome when people are talking about me in German and they think I can't understand them--it always freaks people out when I respond to them. Haha. Online...hmmm...Kate keeps up with the news...wherever it may be...hahaha...she is always announcing the latest headlines to whoever will listen! Also she frequents Facebook and her email. Jill is a game player. Yahtzee, Text Twist, Bookworm...among other games. Also she reads her local hometown newspaper everyday just to see what's going on in New Hampshire.  Strange rumors we've heard about ourselves? We try not to listen to rumors cause who likes hearing strange things about yourself that aren't true? Weird talents. Jill can do this thing called "Doi-Doi-ing." You won't believe it until you see it--we will vlog it sometime soon. Kate is super double jointed. It's pretty funny. Not sure that's a talent but yeah.

Where do you write most of your music? Does it just come to you or do you have to work on it? What normally triggers you to write a song (like an emotion, a thought, a memory, a person, etc.)? What was the last thing you bought & from where? -Jaclyn

Since we are hardly ever in one place for long, we write anywhere and everywhere. Yes, we have to work on it! Songwriting can be MISERABLY DIFFICULT at times. Sometimes you have to write a large amount of crap to get one good song. One pretty successful songwriter once gave us this advice, "Don't be afraid to suck."  Songs come in all different ways..sometimes they come out in 5 seconds, other times you write something and have to come back to it months (even years) later. Normally when one of us goes through something that will stir up emotions/feelings, that's what inspires us to write. It's sad that hard times can produce lots of songs. Ha! I guess that's one of the plagues of being an artist. The last thing Kate bought was movie theater tickets & popcorn. Went and saw  "It's Complicated." And yes, it's complicated. The last thing Jill bought was groceries at Kroger...boring!

More later! Thanks for the questions...and if you have any more...remember tomorrow's the last day to get them in!

Go drink some coffee, tea, hot chocolate or whatever will keep you warm. It's cold out there people :)

Hugs.

It is upon us.

The beginning of the year always brings lots of exciting things. However, it brings the not-so-exciting things as well...an excess of NutriSystem, car dealership, and Match.com commercials. Ahhh. But the new year has also brought us lots of questions...you people come up with some very funny questions. :) A whole bunch of you have asked the same question...are we going to put our merchandise for sale online? The answer is yes. Sometime in the near future you will be able to buy J&K t-shirts, CD's & J&K coffee mugs...haha..ok...no coffee mugs, but still. For now there are no plans to re-release the "Finding My Own Way EP" in a physical form...iTunes & CDbaby are where you'll be able to continue downloading it.

Here are some more entertaining questions we got:

Do you guys ever go to the Bluebird Cafe & watch the songwriters perform in the round? -Brad

We do! The Bluebird Cafe is a great little spot to watch some great live music. We have both been there several times. It's definitely one of Nashville's treasures.

I was wondering how you guys felt when I sang "Pop Song" at my Open Mic Soundcheck? And how much did you hate me when I forgot the lyrics? ;) How did you feel about the whole Open Mic experience? -Liz

Ahh Liz. It was awesome to hear you sing "Pop Song" at soundcheck. Kate's cheeks turned red. Truth. We did not hate you an ounce when you forgot the lyrics...we were impressed at how many you remembered. We forget our own lyrics all the time anyway! The Open Mic experience was fun--a great way to meet more cool people & we loved seeing how excited people got! Good times.

Are you two going to do anymore shows between Kelly's concerts? -Dee

Yes. We are planning on playing more shows in between our shows with Kelly in 2010. Get ready!!!

I was wondering if Jill is from New Hampshire or Massachusetts? I am also wondering if you ladies ever tour on your own or if you only do shows when you visit a city that Kelly is performing in? -Vince

Jill is from New Hampshire! Born and raised. Yup. And yes, we have and will continue to play other places but it has been more convenient to play in coordinating cities that we are playing with Kelly in. But, have no fear Vince, when we have some time off we wanna come play for you. :)

Have you ever had a huuuuge fight and were tired of each other?  -Ania

HAha. Yes Ania. We are like sisters...and if you know what sisters are like...they fight, yell, scream, laugh, say sorry and then do it all again the next day! HA! In all seriousness, we are pretty honest with each other and know that to have a healthy friendship you have to be honest and sometimes that hurts feelings but ultimately that's for the best.

Have no worries if we didn't answer your question in this blog--we are just picking random ones and will continue to answer them :)

Hope everyone had a safe & happy new year celebreation!!

Answers to Questions...Part Deux.

More answers...to more awesome questions: I was wondering which one of you is clumsier?

We are both pretty clumsy but in our own special ways. More shall be explained in the next question...

What is one of your most memorable accidents?

Jill: Falling down the wet/icy stairs at the half-time show in Dallas. Kate: I tripped walking on and off stage a few times...but in my defense...it was dark and there were cables. Grrrrr....

How have you guys grown as vocalist/writers/people since joining the KC camp?

We are so lucky to work with such an awesome group of people. EVERYONE is rad. Being around people who are RIDICULOUSLY good at what they do and are actually down to earth, good people is just phenomenal. We are constantly learning from them...and just having a darn good time :)

How exactly did you guys meet? And did you hit it off immediately not only as a musical act, but as friends?

We met at a music program on Martha's Vineyard...both of our colleges were a part of this study abroad program and we both decided to go our junior year of college. The program offers classes in songwriting, studio recording, performance, etc. Who wouldn't want to ditch normal classes and go there?...it was the best experience ever...I mean...we got college credit for writing and listening to music all day...how rad is that? We were roommates--which was totally random--and we pretty much became friends right away. About 3 weeks into the semester, one of our homework assignments was to co-write a song with someone. We wanted to get it out of the way and decided to write together...when we performed it for the class and the professors, everyone was like, "Wow...your voices really go together well...you guys should keep singing together." And...we did.

As newer artists in the business…are you at all anxious about the direction that the industry has taken…and how do you define success?

The industry as a whole has taken such a dramatic turn in the last few years...it's scary and exciting all at the same time. We can't fight the changes...we can only try and roll with them :) Success to Kate: Being able to do music and make a living to provide for myself and hopefully a family someday. Success to Jill: Doing the best you possibly can and being happy.

I just wanted to know what your album will be like?

You never really know until it's done but there will be a mix of folk/pop and yes even a little bit of country...

If you weren't singers, what do you think you'd be now?

Goooooooood question. Kate says: Probably a personal assistant or something. I like running errands, making lists and checking things off of the list. Haha. I'm so lame. Jill says: I don't know....thank God I don't have to know.

What inspired you both to buy fish and chips!?!

Kate says: Hahaaaa....it was Jill. I just wanted a photo op. Jill says: Isn't that what you are supposed to do?

Favorite place in Seattle?

Kate says she's only been there a few times...Jill can't remember the name of the restaurant that we frequented while we were there but it was pretty cool :)

When you breeze through town, where's the one place you must go?

Generally when we get back from a trip, our first stop is Pei Wei. And just so you know that I'm not lying...the day that we got back from this last tour we went there first thing. Here is a pic of kate hugging the menu because she was so happy to be there:

Are you going to include "Pop Song" on your upcoming album?

We can neither confirm or deny the existence of "Pop Song" on our next album. Haha...how was that for a politically correct answer?? Haha.

What are each of your biggest fears?

Kate says: Mismatched socks and having to go through security at the airport where they make you take your shoes off. Haha.

Jill says: Having to go back to school and take a really hard math class. I HATE math.

When you aren't on tour or in the studio what do you like to do?

Kate says: I love just hanging out...having movie marathon days in my comfy pants and sweatshirt. I like taking walks, playing tennis or laying by a pool. I'm a people person...so I like hanging out with my friends and laughing a lot.

Jill says: I like being spontaneous. I'm usually happy doing anything as long as I'm with people that can have a good time or if I have good music to listen to.

What is the weirdest food that you like?

Kate says: Now try not to judge me immediately...but I like brussel sprouts. Yes, Jill thinks I am crazy, but...I like them.

Jill says: I've recently become a fan of Tofu. I swear I'm not a tree hugger.

How have you grown as artists since JillandKate began?

We've become more confident and learned to take more risks as artists.

What music do you listen to that might be surprising to your fans?

Kate says: Jay-Z. I love his music.

Jill says: Old school Celine Dion.

Describe each other in three words.

Kate says: Jill is loyal, fun, and ridiculously talented. Ok...4 words.

Jill says: Kate is perky, generous, and compassionate.

Who's messier, Jill or Kate?

Let's just say we both know how to trash a dressing room pretty quickly. Haha.

Who's the better driver, Jill or Kate?

Hmmm....Jill says Jill. Kate says Kate.

Can you pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeeeeee put Texas back on yalls MySpace???

We will see what we can do :) But just because you put so many "e's" in your please! HAha.

Typical one but everyone loves it......You can meet one person for one day, it can be anyone dead or alive....Who do you meet?

Kate says: My dad's dad. Never met him.

Jill says: Cliche, but...Jesus.

You come across a time machine, 1 journey only... where do you go?

1982. The best year ever.

Everyone has a net addiction, even my 50 year old mother has become a facebook addicted! So whats yours?

Kate says: CNN.com. Everyday. I get made fun of for my addiction because I'm always spouting out random things I read there each day.

Jill says: My local New Hampshire newspaper. I like to keep up with my hometown.

What album is currently most played on your mp3 player?

Kate says: Patty Griffin. My special mix of Patty's songs.

Jills says: E=MC2. Mariah.

If any of your songs could be redone by Weird Al Yankovic, which would it be, why that song and what would you call it?

We don't really know but Jill says that Amish Paradise is one of my favorite songs in the world!

Just saw the video of Deaner and Einar doing their interpretive dance. My question is: Who’s interpretation is better?

How could we pick? They both are unique and let's face it...hilarious. We could not choose.

What is your favourite cookie?

Kate says: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip or Chocolate Chips with Nuts. YUM.

Jill says: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip. Or the big giant chocolate chip cookies from Mrs. Fields.

What are your pet peeves?

Kate says: When people don't shut cabinets or drawers behind them.

Jill says: When 'your' and 'you're' are used improperly. Sometimes I can be a grammar nerd.

What is the one thing you are really proud of?

Kate says: My family.

Jill says: My family.

So a lot of us have heard that Jill plays a mean guitar hero (expert level from what I hear or whatever the highest is) but what about you Kate...can you give her a run for her money? Is there any possibilty of y'all showcasing those skills on a upcoming video blog? :)

I (kate) cannot give Jill a run for her money in guitar hero. Let's just be honest that she is a ridiculous guitar hero player and I am just alright. Don't feel bad for me though...I have a blast playing. And that's a wonderful suggestion for a video blog.

Favorite theme park? Theme park ride?

Kate says: Disneyland. Thunder Mountain...I think that's what it's called...

Jills says: Islands of Adventure. The Hulk. Best roller coaster ever.

Do either of you have any phobias?

Jill says: Oddly enough, the same as Kate.

Did you slap kate and cory for laughing when you fell at the NFL event?

No...I was laughing too--it was hilarious!

What was the favorite fan-gift you ever got?

We think it's pretty rad that people give us gifts at all!!!! There is no way we could pick out a favorite! We've gotten some awesome stuff :)

Do you remember the front row jumpers from Mannheim, Cologne, Antwerp and Amsterdam with the blink ears on the head?

Yes we do :)

Would you ever move to another country?

Never say never....but probably not.

You Oughtta Know...Part 1.

Here's the first round of answers to ya'lls burning questions... 1. What are your plans for an upcoming album?

We are so excited that people want new music :)  We do not have a release date as of yet--because making a record is a big, expensive project...BUT, we promise to announce a release date as soon as we have one.

2. How has such close proximity to “celebrity” affected your views on being musicians and your future in this business?

There are extreme highs and lows in this business no matter what level you are at...you have to love what you do in order to withstand the lows and sacrifices that this job entails...but the highs are definitely worth it :)

3. Starbucks or Dunkin'?

Starbucks for hot....Dunkin' for iced.  Bam.

4. Whats your secret to having such amazing hair?

Hahaha....

Jill: Amazing hair?  Hats.

Kate: My friends make fun of me for having greasy hair...so it's funny that people out there might think I have amazing hair.  My secret weapon to fight the "bad hair days" is dry shampoo.  It's amazing...and it gives you tons of volume.  Klorane makes it...I use it like it's going out of style.  Haha.

5. What are your goals for 2008?

Have fun.  Be happy.  Do good.  (Not necessarily in that order)

6. Is there a plan to tour in Europe?

It's not in the immediate plans, but you guys are awesome and we hope to do that eventually.

7. Where has been your favourite place to visit on the tour?

Kate says...London baby!  Jill says...Australia and Cardiff.

8. Did you get to do much touristy-type sightseeing?

We didn't have a whole lot of free time--one of the highlights was doing a scavenger hunt in Cardiff :)  It was an awesome way to see the sights and have some good laughs while doing it.

9. Were there any of the shows that you particularly enjoyed more than the others?

It's hard to pick a favorite--every show is a blast.

10. Will you release your music in Europe esp. Germany, as well??

Our current music is available on iTunes and on our website.  We do ship overseas.  It will be the same for our new music :)

11. Jill, what's the one biggest thing that Kate does that annoys you and Kate what does Jill do that drives you craaaazy?

Jill says: Kate is a multi-tasker...a chronic multi-tasker.  And I am a uni-tasker...you can see the problem.

Kate says: Jill's idea of being on time is being 10 minutes early....I am not like this...

Great guys...that last question just broke up the band...HAHA...just kidding.

12. What's your fav song of the ones you have written? And why?

Jill says:  A tie between Alive and East Coast Bound....East Coast Bound because I love where I'm from and Alive because I just love the song.

Kate says: A song called Who Will Cry.  We've never released it--but it's the most therapeutic song I've ever written or been a part of.

13. When is Jill going to rock the side-ponytail during a concert?

If I gave that information away, it would not be sacred.

14.   When did you write your first songs?

Jill started writing songs in Junior High, Kate started shortly thereafter.  We met at a music program in college and wrote our first song together there...it was called Stained.  That's right....we shared that with you.  Haha...

15. What do you look for in a guy?

Kate says:  Honesty.  Someone who is super fun...like me...haha.  Tall.  Not a tool.  Can't spend more time getting ready than me...or wear more jewelry than I do.

Jill says:  Gotta have a sense of humor.  Tall.  Awesome.  Easy-going.  And He can't be a Yankees fan :) But we'll take what we can get :)

16.  If you could date any celebrity, who would it be and why?

Both of us say: J.T.T.  That's right...Jonathan Taylor Thomas...but only if we were 12 again.

17. Out of your songs, which is your favourite to perform live?

Our current fav to perform live is Finding My Own Way....be looking for that one on the new album :)

18.  What inspired you to become singers?

We both found music to be our safe place when we were kids...even though we didn't know each other, we were obsessed with the same artists and addicted to recording songs off of the radio onto our cassette tapes.  All hail the early 90's.

19.  Did you guys see the front row at Manchester rocking out with our side ponytails?

How could we miss it???  You guys are awesome :)

20.  Uhmm Kate...are you sure that thing was a hairdryer???

Well...I hope so :) Haha.

21. If you had to make a CD with only 5-10 of your favorite songs ever, what would be on it? We are each choosing 7 songs...this is a hard question.

Jill says: Stay-Lisa Loeb Rain- Patty Griffin Walking in Memphis-Marc Cohn Perfect-Alanis Morissette 6,8,12-Brian McKnight Drive-Incubus Mr. Jones-Counting Crows

Kate says: If-Janet Jackson Are You Still Mad?-Alanis Morissette Love is Overrated- The Ataris Hook-Blues Traveller Whenever You Call-Mariah Carey and Brian McKnight When It Don't Come Easy-Patty Griffin My Song-Brandi Carlile

22.  What was the first concert you went to? Most recent? Favorite?

Kate says:  August 16th, 1992...Amy Grant.  It changed my life.  I still have my ticket stub :)  Most recent...Lady Antebellum at a club in Nashville.  Favorite...Patty Griffin at the Hotel Cafe in LA.  Front row...I cried for the first 3 songs straight.

Jill says:  1994.  Steven Curtis Chapman.  And Jill says the same thing about the other two questions...except she didn't cry for the first 3 songs....her tear ducts are stronger than mine :)

More to come....
