Twelve Twenty-One.

12/21. This date holds some significance for us.

One, because one of our besties had her precious little daughter on this day. Heyyyyy Annie.

Two, because two years ago today an article came out in the Washington Post about us. During our #31DaysofBlogging two years ago, we told the story of our year and shed light on things we had previously not made public. If you haven’t read it, you can read it here. After we posted the blog, some news outlets reached out to us and the Washington Post was one of them.

The story is of us being promptly fired from a male country artist’s tour after we blogged about an experience we had with another male co-worker on the tour. We didn’t use names. We weren’t putting anyone down. We were sharing our story in hopes that it would help other people who had been in similar situations.

Because that’s what’s helpful about hard times or tough situations. If we share them and speak our truth, we are allowing others to say--me too.

We bring this up today because in the last few months a lot has come to light for a lot of people with the #metoo movement. The blinders have been taken off and truth is coming to light. We hope and pray that by enough people speaking and sharing their truth, that the stigmas will change.

The thing that we still find so disheartening is that when women speak up or out about issues, i.e., being harassed, not being paid fairly, etc. they are automatically labeled “troublemakers.” And we are sick of it. Hopefully enough women speaking up and out will make people realize that we are not troublemakers. We are women who are being treated unfairly and have a mouth to voice that.

Thank you Catt Sadler for standing up for your value and worth. Thank you for having the courage to walk away. To not only speak about your value, but to put action behind it. We need more women with fiery courage like you to pave the way.

We love that the #metoo movement is bringing people together. That’s one of our biggest goals through our music and a value that we build our business on: We’re all in this together.

If you are needing to share a truth, but have been afraid to, we’ve been there too. All we can tell you is that if you can find the courage to speak the truth, there is freedom in that. But, sharing your truth and holding to your truth often will cost you something.

There is no fun way to package that sentence.

For us, we spoke our truth and it cost us our jobs.

Catt Sadler took a stand, told her truth, and she left her job.

For so many other women, it has cost them even more.

But we believe that we are fighting for each other. Every time a woman shares her truth, she’s moving the needle forward for other women everywhere. Let’s keep that needle moving.

Sending you love and courage,

J&K

PS. We wrote this song in the midst of all of our getting fired drama. Read the lyrics and let the words empower you.

There will be times you’re mistreated for being a girl

For having two X chromosomes in an XY world

And people will say you can never take them on

Boys will be boys and they’re just too strong

But I got two feet and I got one big mouth

I’m not too weak to stand and I’m not afraid to shout

And you can call me what you want, but you can’t shut me down

Cause I am a girl

Standing up for every other girl in the world

Who’s been living this underground

I am a girl

Singing this for every other girl in the world

Sing it together now

I am a girl

I am a girl

They didn’t like it when I called them out

Telling the story of how they pushed me around

And they’re beating their chests somewhere in this town

So I’m telling my fellow girls to watch out

Watch out

But I got two feet and I got one big mouth

I’m not too weak to stand and I’m not afraid to shout

And you can call me what you want, but you can’t shut me down

Cause I am a girl

Standing up for every other girl in the world

Who’s been living this underground

I am a girl

Singing this for every other girl in the world

Sing it together now

I am a girl

I am a girl

Stand together

Walk together

Make a better world

Stand together

Sing together

Make a better world

Stand together

Rise together

Make a better world

Stand together

Cause I am a girl

Standing up for every other girl in the world

Who’s been living this underground

I am a girl

Singing this for every other girl in the world

Sing it together now

I am a girl

I am a girl
