All of a sudden it was June and I (Kate) got an amazing invite from my parents. They invited me to go with them to Key Largo, FL for a few days of vacation. Heck yeah. A free vacation...with my family...and gorgeous blue waters….YES please.
It was a surreal time of relaxing and reflecting on the year thus far and it also enabled me to cross off an item from my bucket list that I wanted to accomplish this year: PADDLE BOARDING!
My dad, sister and two brothers all headed out to a water adventure place and got the low-down. My brothers shared a kayak and so did my sister and my dad. I was the lone wolf on the paddle board. I almost chickened out at the last minute...but my sweet dad encouraged me to try it out and assured me that I would feel so accomplished afterwards.
So, I got my 3 minute lesson from a surfer kid who pretty much assured me it was the easiest thing ever, which made me a little nervous that if I couldn’t do it, I may or may not be an idiot. Ha.
Here are my life-lessons from paddle boarding….take them or leave them :)
- You sometimes have to get on your hands and knees and crawl. That’s how you make it on and off the board. Get low to the ground, center yourself with as little gravity as possible...low and slow.
- It’s easier if you’re going with the current. We went down a canal the direction of the current and it was WAY easier than when we headed back to where we started. HOWEVER, the way you want to go is not always going with the current. Tricky.
- You get further with others. You might be thinking...hello Kate?? You just told us you were alone on a paddle board...what’s this tandem business? Well, I WAS alone and I kept seeing how much further the tandem kayaks were getting. I was trailing far behind my little brothers who were flying past me because they were paddling together.
- Sometimes you need to do the opposite to get where you’re going. Guys, for the life of me I had the hardest time remembering: to go right--paddle left. To go left: paddle right. Ughhhh. Sometimes you need to do what feels out of the norm to get you to where you want (or should) be going.
Coming up tomorrow we are going to tell you about how we played one of our biggest show EVER and opened up for LUKE BRYAN! It was awesome and you won’t wanna miss it….
